Ebbeling Single-Stage Treadmill Walking Test Calculator
Estimate VO2max from the Ebbeling single-stage submaximal treadmill walking test: enter walking speed, steady-state heart rate on the 5% grade, age and sex.
How it works
VO2max = 15.1 + 21.8 × speed (mph) − 0.327 × HR − 0.263 × speed × age + 0.00504 × HR × age + 5.98 × sex · sex: male = 1, female = 0
Ebbeling et al. (1991) designed a single-stage submaximal walking test for adults aged 20–59: a 4-minute warm-up at 0% grade at a brisk speed that brings the heart rate to 50–70% of the age-predicted maximum, then 4 minutes at the same speed on a 5% grade. The steady-state heart rate on the grade, together with speed, age and sex, predicts VO2max with a standard error of about 4.9 ml/kg/min, which makes it a safe option for people who should not do maximal tests.
Worked example
A 35-year-old man walks at 5.6 km/h (3.48 mph) and his steady heart rate on the 5% grade is 130 bpm: VO2max = 15.1 + 21.8 × 3.48 − 0.327 × 130 − 0.263 × 3.48 × 35 + 0.00504 × 130 × 35 + 5.98 = 45.3 ml/kg/min (13.0 METs).

Frequently asked questions
How do I do the Ebbeling treadmill test?
Warm up for 4 minutes at 0% grade at a brisk walking speed (3.4–4.5 mph) that raises your heart rate to 50–70% of 220 minus age. Without changing speed, raise the grade to 5% and walk 4 more minutes. Record the heart rate at the end of minutes 3 and 4; if they differ by more than 5 bpm, keep walking another minute.
Who is the Ebbeling test suitable for?
It was validated in healthy adults aged 20–59. Because it stays submaximal it is useful for beginners and older or deconditioned adults, but anyone with heart disease risk factors should get medical clearance first.
Can I enter my speed in km/h?
Yes. Choose km/h and the calculator converts to mph before applying the equation, because the published coefficients use miles per hour.
Why does a lower heart rate give a higher VO2max?
At the same walking speed and grade, a fitter person needs a smaller share of their cardiovascular capacity, so their heart beats more slowly. The equation turns that difference into a predicted maximal oxygen uptake.
