How it works

Value per subscriber per month = monthly email revenue ÷ subscribers · Annual value per subscriber = monthly value × 12 · Annual list value = monthly revenue × 12

A subscriber is worth whatever revenue your list generates divided by how many people are on it. Knowing the per-subscriber value tells you what a new sign-up is worth, so you can decide how much to spend acquiring one and what a bounce or unsubscribe actually costs. Per-subscriber value is the metric to watch over time: growing the list while it falls means you are adding people who do not buy.

Worked example

A list of 10,000 subscribers that drives $4,000 in sales a month is worth $0.40 per subscriber per month — about $4.80 a year each — and $48,000 in annual revenue across the whole list.

Frequently asked questions

What is a subscriber worth?

Divide the revenue your email drives in a month by your active subscriber count. Many consumer lists land somewhere around $0.10–$1.00 per subscriber per month, but it varies hugely by industry, price point and how often you sell.

Should I count total or active subscribers?

Use active subscribers — people who actually open or click. Counting long-dormant addresses inflates the list size and understates the true per-subscriber value, and can hurt deliverability too.

How do I raise email list value?

Improve segmentation and relevance, clean out dead addresses, test send frequency and offers, and grow the list with buyers rather than freebie-seekers. Rising per-subscriber value, not just a bigger list, is the goal.
