How it works

Words per page = spacing base (single ≈ 550, 1.15 ≈ 478, 1.5 ≈ 367, double ≈ 275 for 12 pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, US Letter) × (12 ÷ font size)² × font-width factor × text-area factor × paragraph factor · pages = words ÷ words per page · words needed = pages × words per page

Page count is word count divided by how many words fit on a page. The starting point is the classic academic layout — 12 pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins on US Letter — where a double-spaced page holds about 275 words and a single-spaced page about 550. Each setting then scales that figure. Font size counts twice, because a bigger font makes both the letters wider and the lines taller: 14 pt fits about (12 ÷ 14)² ≈ 73% as many words as 12 pt. Wider typefaces such as Arial, Verdana or Courier New fit fewer characters on each line than Times New Roman, while Garamond fits more. Margins and paper size change the text area: A4 is a little taller and narrower than Letter and holds about 4% more with 2.5 cm margins. Short paragraphs, headings and lists waste the end of many lines, so they lower the count. Switch to Pages → words to find how much you need to write to fill a page requirement. Treat the result as a close estimate; the exact count depends on your document.

Worked example

A 1,500-word essay, double-spaced in 12 pt Times New Roman (about 275 words per page), fills 1,500 ÷ 275 ≈ 5.5 pages — 6 pages rounded up, plus a title page if you add one. In 12 pt Arial (about 239 words per page) the same essay runs to about 6.3 pages, and in 14 pt Times New Roman (about 202 words per page) to about 7.4 pages. Going the other way, a 10-page double-spaced paper in 12 pt Times New Roman needs about 2,750 words.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About 3.6 pages double-spaced or 1.8 pages single-spaced in 12 pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. In Arial it is about 4.2 pages double-spaced, and larger fonts or wider margins push it higher.

How many words do I need for a 5-page paper?

About 1,375 words double-spaced in 12 pt Times New Roman, or about 1,200 in 12 pt Arial. Choose Pages → words to work it out for your own font, spacing and margins.

Why is my real page count different?

Headings, block quotes, a title block, wide margins and the short final lines of paragraphs all add white space the estimate cannot see. Choose “Many short paragraphs” under More options if your text has lots of breaks, and treat the result as a close approximation.

Does font choice matter?

Yes. Arial or Verdana fit fewer characters on a line than Times New Roman, so the same word count spans more pages — about 15% more in Arial and 30% more in Verdana. Garamond fits about 10% more words per page.

Does A4 paper change the page count?

Slightly. With 2.5 cm (1-inch) margins, an A4 page holds about 4% more text than US Letter because it is taller, so the page count drops a little.
