How it works

fiscal-year start = the 1st of the chosen month, in this year if the date is on or after it, else last year · day number = date − fiscal-year start + 1 · total days = next start − this start (365 or 366) · percent elapsed = day number ÷ total × 100

A fiscal (financial) year rarely matches the calendar. The UK, India and Japan start it on April 1; Australia on July 1; the US federal government on October 1. This finds the most recent fiscal-year start on or before your date and counts the days from there, so April 1 is day 1 of a UK financial year. It also reports the total days in that fiscal year (366 when it spans a February 29), the days remaining, and the share of the year that has passed — handy for budgeting and run-rate figures.

Worked example

For a fiscal year starting April 1, the date September 16, 2026 falls in FY 2026/27. From April 1 to September 16 is 168 days, so it is day 169 of 365 — about 46.3% through the year, with 196 days remaining.

Frequently asked questions

Which fiscal-year start should I pick?

Choose the one your organization or country uses: January for a calendar-year basis, April for the UK, India and Japan, July for Australia, or October for the US federal government. Many companies also use other starts — pick the closest month.

Does it handle leap years?

Yes. The total days come from the actual gap between one fiscal-year start and the next, so a fiscal year that contains February 29 correctly totals 366 days.

Is day 1 the first day of the fiscal year?

Yes. The start date itself is day 1, matching how a day-of-year count works, so the last day of the fiscal year is day 365 (or 366).
