Fraction of an Hour to Minutes Calculator
Convert a fraction of an hour — like 3/4 or 2/3 — into exact minutes and seconds for scheduling, billing and timing.
How it works
Minutes = (numerator ÷ denominator) × 60 · Seconds = fractional minute × 60
An hour is 60 minutes, so any fraction of an hour is that fraction times 60. A quarter hour is 15 minutes, a third is 20, a half is 30. When the result is not a whole number of minutes, the leftover fraction of a minute is converted to seconds by multiplying by 60 again.
Worked example
3/4 of an hour = (3 ÷ 4) × 60 = 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes exactly. For 2/3: (2 ÷ 3) × 60 = 40 minutes, which happens to be whole; 1/7 of an hour is about 8.571 minutes, or 8m 34s.
Frequently asked questions
How many minutes is a third of an hour?
One third of an hour is (1 ÷ 3) × 60 = 20 minutes exactly.
What if the fraction is bigger than one?
It still works — 5/4 of an hour is 1.25 × 60 = 75 minutes, i.e. an hour and a quarter. The tool just multiplies the fraction by 60.
Why do I get seconds and not a clean number of minutes?
Fractions like 1/7 do not divide 60 evenly, so there is a leftover part of a minute. That leftover is shown as seconds by multiplying it by 60.
