Hours to Decimal Time Converter
Convert hours and minutes to decimal hours for payroll and timesheets — and turn decimal hours back into hours and minutes.
How it works
decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 · hours & minutes: hours = ⌊decimal⌋, minutes = round((decimal − hours) × 60)
Payroll and billing systems record time as a decimal because you cannot multiply “7 hours 45 minutes” by an hourly rate directly. The conversion is exact: each minute is one-sixtieth of an hour, so 45 minutes is 0.75 of an hour and 7:45 becomes 7.75. Going the other way, the whole-number part is the hours and the fractional part times 60 is the minutes — 7.75 hours is 7 hours and 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.
Worked example
A 7-hour 45-minute shift converts to 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 decimal hours. Paid at $20/hour that is exactly $155.00. Reversing 7.75 gives 7 hours and 45 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Why 60 and not 100?
An hour has 60 minutes, so each minute is 1/60 of an hour, not 1/100. That is why 30 minutes is 0.5 and 15 minutes is 0.25 — dividing by 100 instead would overstate short times.
What is 15, 30 and 45 minutes in decimal?
15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5, and 45 minutes is 0.75. Any other count is minutes ÷ 60, for example 20 minutes ≈ 0.333.
Does rounding lose money on a timesheet?
It can. 0.01 hour is 0.6 of a minute, so two-decimal rounding is accurate to well under a minute. For exact pay, keep the four-decimal value or work in total minutes.
