Freemium Conversion Revenue Calculator
Turn a free-user base and a free-to-paid conversion rate into paying users and monthly recurring revenue, and see the revenue value of every free signup.
How it works
Paying users = free users × conversion rate · MRR = paying users × price · Revenue per free user = MRR ÷ free users
Freemium revenue is a chain of three numbers: how many people sign up free, what fraction upgrade, and what they pay. The revenue-per-free-user figure ties them together and tells you what a single free signup is worth — the ceiling on what you can spend to acquire one. Because typical freemium conversion sits in the low single digits, small movements in the conversion rate change revenue as much as large movements in traffic.
Worked example
With 50,000 free users, a 4% conversion produces 2,000 paying users. At $15 a month that is $30,000 MRR ($360,000 ARR), meaning each free signup is worth $0.60 of monthly revenue.
Frequently asked questions
What is a typical freemium conversion rate?
Most freemium products convert 1–5% of free users to paid, with 2–4% common. Products with strong upgrade triggers or usage limits sit at the higher end; broad consumer apps often fall below 1%.
Why track revenue per free user?
It sets your acquisition budget: if each free signup is worth $0.60 a month, you know roughly how much you can pay to acquire one and still profit. It also lets you compare channels on a single revenue yardstick.
How can I raise freemium conversion?
Tighten the free tier around a value the paid plan unlocks, add contextual upgrade prompts at the moment users hit a limit, and shorten the time to first value. Even a one-point gain in conversion is a large revenue lift at scale.
