How it works

GB = [(leader wins − team wins) + (team losses − leader losses)] ÷ 2 · winning percentage = W ÷ (W + L) · games remaining = season games − W − L.

Games behind is the standard way newspapers and leagues express the distance between two teams in a standings table. It averages the gap in the win column and the gap in the loss column, so a team that has played fewer games can be a half-game back. Each head-to-head swing — your team winning while the leader loses — cuts the gap by one full game; a win on the leader’s off day cuts it by half a game. A negative value means your team is actually ahead.

Worked example

The leader is 90–60 and your team is 85–65 in a 162-game season. GB = [(90 − 85) + (65 − 60)] ÷ 2 = (5 + 5) ÷ 2 = 5.0 games behind. The leader plays .600 ball and your team .567, both have 12 games left, and your team can finish with at most 97 wins.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate games behind?

Add the difference in wins (leader − team) to the difference in losses (team − leader) and divide by 2. A 90–60 leader and an 85–65 team are (5 + 5) ÷ 2 = 5 games apart.

Why can a team be half a game behind?

When two teams have played a different number of games, the win gap and loss gap are not equal, so their average ends in .5. For example, 50–40 versus 50–41 is half a game.

Can a team lead in winning percentage but be games behind?

Yes, occasionally. Standings in most leagues are ordered by winning percentage, so a team with fewer games played can be listed first while showing a small games-behind figure against a team that has played more.

What is the difference between games behind and the magic number?

Games behind measures today’s gap. The magic number counts how many leader wins plus trailing-team losses are needed to clinch, so it also depends on games remaining.
