How it works

Meals = people × meals/day × days · Cost per meal = grocery spend ÷ meals

Total grocery spend on its own says little — a big family and a single person can post the same bill for wildly different value. Dividing by the number of meals actually served normalizes the figure so you can compare months, households or eating-out habits on the same footing. Cost per person per day is the companion number that maps cleanly onto published food-budget guidelines.

Worked example

A $600 monthly bill for 2 people eating 3 meals a day across 30 days covers 2 × 3 × 30 = 180 meals. That is 600 ÷ 180 = $3.33 a meal, or $10.00 per person per day.

Frequently asked questions

Should snacks count as a meal?

If snacks are a meaningful part of your spending, add a fractional meal — for example set meals per day to 3.5 to represent three meals plus a snack. The point is to divide the bill by everything the grocery money actually feeds.

How does this compare to eating out?

Track a few restaurant or takeout receipts, divide by the number of meals they covered, and compare with your grocery cost per meal. Home cooking is usually a third to a quarter of the restaurant figure, which is where the real savings live.

What counts as a good cost per meal?

It depends heavily on region and diet, but many households land between $2 and $5 a home-cooked meal. Track your own number over a few months and watch the trend rather than chasing a single target.
