How it works

Contribution per member = fee − variable cost · Break-even members = fixed costs ÷ contribution · Profit = members × contribution − fixed costs

A gym is a high-fixed-cost business: the rent, equipment leases and core staff cost the same whether 300 or 900 people walk in. Each member adds their fee minus a small variable cost (billing fees, towels, wear on the machines), and that contribution is what covers the fixed base. Dividing fixed costs by the per-member contribution gives the membership count at which the gym breaks even; every member beyond it is almost pure profit, which is why filling a gym is so lucrative once the fixed costs are met.

Worked example

At a $45 average fee and $6 variable cost, each member contributes $39. Covering $22,000 of monthly fixed costs takes 22,000 ÷ 39 ≈ 565 members. With 600 members the gym is 35 past break-even, earning about 600 × 39 − 22,000 = $1,400 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a gym’s profit so sensitive to membership count?

Because costs are mostly fixed. Below break-even every month is a loss, but once you pass it each new member’s fee is nearly all profit — there is very little extra cost to serve one more person. This is why membership growth, not price, usually drives gym profitability.

Should I include personal training or classes here?

This calculator covers core membership economics. If personal training and paid classes are a meaningful profit center, model them separately — they have their own variable costs (trainer pay) and margins that differ from flat membership dues.

How does this differ from a member’s break-even?

This is the owner’s break-even — the members needed to cover the gym’s costs. A member’s own break-even asks how many visits justify their fee. The site’s member-side gym-membership break-even calculator handles that separate question.
