How it works

Servings = guests × cups · Milk = servings × mug size · Per 8 oz: 2 tbsp cocoa + 1½ tbsp sugar (or 1½ oz chopped chocolate)

Hot chocolate scales cleanly because it is built per cup: a mug of about 8 oz takes roughly one cup of milk plus either two tablespoons of cocoa powder and a little sugar, or about 1.5 oz of chopped real chocolate for a richer, glossier drink. Multiply those per-cup amounts by the number of servings and adjust for your actual mug size, and you have a shopping list for the whole party. For a big batch, warm the milk gently over low heat or in a slow cooker, whisk in the cocoa or chocolate until smooth, and keep it below a simmer so it does not scorch or form a skin.

Worked example

For 12 guests at 1 mug of 8 oz each: servings = 12, milk = 12 × 8 = 96 oz (12 cups, about 2.8 L). Classic style needs 12 × 2 = 24 tbsp cocoa (1.5 cups) and 12 × 1.5 = 18 tbsp sugar, plus marshmallows to taste.

Frequently asked questions

Cocoa powder or real chocolate?

Cocoa powder is cheaper, easy to store and dissolves readily with sugar for a classic cup. Chopped real chocolate (or chips) melts into a richer, creamier, glossier drink but costs more and needs gentle heat to melt smoothly. Many recipes use a mix: cocoa for chocolate intensity plus a little chopped chocolate for body.

How do I keep hot chocolate warm for a party?

A slow cooker on the low or warm setting is ideal — make the batch, then let guests self-serve. Whisk occasionally to prevent a skin forming and to redistribute any cocoa that settles. Keep it below a simmer; prolonged boiling can scorch the milk and dull the flavour.

Can I make it with water or non-dairy milk?

Yes. Whole milk gives the creamiest result, but oat and soy milks froth and thicken well and work beautifully. Water makes a thinner, more cocoa-forward drink; if you use it, a splash of cream or a pat of butter restores some richness.
