How it works

Total = CARS + Chem/Phys + Bio/Biochem + Psych/Soc · Percentile = AAMC concordance(total)

Each MCAT section is scored 118–132, and the four add to a total between 472 and 528, centered near 500. The percentile curve is densest around the middle, so a two- or three-point move near 500 shifts your rank sharply. Medical schools look at both the total and the balance across sections, since a very low single section can flag a weakness even when the total looks strong.

Worked example

Sections of 127, 126, 128 and 125 sum to 506, which sits near the 68th percentile — comfortably above the ~500 median and competitive for many programs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good MCAT total?

The median is around 500–501. A 508–511 is roughly the 75th–84th percentile and competitive for many schools; top programs often see 515+ (90th percentile and up).

Does section balance matter?

Yes. Two applicants with the same total can be read differently if one has an even spread and the other has one very weak section, since schools screen on minimum section scores too.
