How it works

Meal calories = (meal share ÷ sum of shares) × daily budget

You set how you want to weight each meal and the calculator normalises the four shares to 100%, so they do not have to add up exactly — enter 25/30/30/15 or 2/3/3/1.5 and you get the same split. Each meal then gets that fraction of your daily calorie budget. This is useful for meal planning when you already know your total calorie target and simply want to divide it sensibly across the day.

Worked example

On a 2,000 kcal budget with shares of 25/30/30/15 (summing to 100), breakfast gets 25% = 500 kcal, lunch and dinner 30% = 600 kcal each, and snacks 15% = 300 kcal, adding back to 2,000 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

Do the percentages need to add up to 100?

No. The calculator divides each share by the total of all four, so any set of numbers works — 25/30/30/15 and 5/6/6/3 produce the same split. This lets you think in ratios rather than forcing an exact 100.

Is there a “best” way to distribute calories?

Evidence is mixed. Total daily intake matters most for weight; some people find a larger breakfast helps appetite control while others prefer a bigger dinner. Choose a split you can sustain and that fits your hunger and schedule.

Where do I get my daily calorie budget?

Estimate it from a TDEE or maintenance-calorie calculator, then adjust up or down for a bulking or cutting goal before splitting it here.
