How it works

zone B time = zone A time + (offset B − offset A) · UTC time = zone A time − offset A · a day shift means the result crossed midnight

Every time zone is defined by a fixed offset from UTC, so converting a wall-clock time between two zones is just adding the difference of their offsets. If zone B is further ahead the result can spill into the next day; if further behind it can fall on the previous day, which the calculator flags. Because it uses the fixed offsets you enter, it stays correct as long as you supply the offsets that are actually in effect — remember these shift by an hour when either place is on daylight saving time.

Worked example

A 9:30 AM meeting in New York (UTC−5) for a colleague in India (UTC+5:30): the offset difference is 10.5 hours, so 9:30 + 10:30 = 8:00 PM the same day in India.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter half-hour zones?

Use the decimal, e.g. India is 5.5 and Nepal is 5.75. The step is a quarter hour so 45-minute offsets work too.

Does this handle daylight saving time?

It uses the fixed offsets you type in, so enter the offset currently in effect. When a region switches to summer time its offset changes by one hour — update the field to match.

Why does the result sometimes say “next day”?

When the far zone is enough hours ahead, the converted time passes midnight into the following day. A large negative difference can likewise land on the previous day. The label tells you which.
