How it works

AM: 12:xx AM → 00xx, 1:00–11:59 AM → same digits with a leading zero (7:05 AM → 0705) · PM: add 12 to the hour (2:30 PM → 14 + 30 → 1430), except 12:xx PM stays 12xx · back to 12-hour: hours 13–23 minus 12 → PM; 00 → 12 AM · Zulu = local − UTC offset

Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits without a colon: the first two digits are the hour from 00 to 23, the last two the minutes. It removes any AM/PM ambiguity, which is why armed forces, hospitals, aviation, emergency services and most of the world outside the US use it. In the US military it is spoken digit-group by digit-group ("fourteen thirty hours"), and times are often given in Zulu time — Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) — so that units in different time zones share one clock.

Worked example

2:30 PM is afternoon, so add 12 to the hour: 2 + 12 = 14, giving 1430 military time (14:30 on a 24-hour clock), 870 minutes after midnight. With a UTC offset of −5 (US Eastern Standard Time) the same moment is 1930Z in Zulu time.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert PM time to military time?

Add 12 to the hour and drop the colon: 1:00 PM → 1300, 6:45 PM → 1845, 11:59 PM → 2359. The one exception is the noon hour: 12:00–12:59 PM stays 1200–1259.

What is 12 AM in military time?

Midnight is 0000 (said "zero hundred hours"), and 12:30 AM is 0030. Some writers use 2400 for the end of a day ("the shift ends at 2400"), but 0000 is the standard start of the day.

How do you say military time out loud?

Say the two pairs of digits: 0800 is "zero eight hundred", 1430 is "fourteen thirty", 2100 is "twenty-one hundred". Leading zeros are spoken ("zero six fifteen" for 0615) and "hours" is often added in formal use.

What is Zulu time?

Zulu (Z) is the military and aviation name for UTC, the time at 0° longitude without daylight saving. To get Zulu from local time, subtract your UTC offset: at UTC−5, 1430 local is 1930Z.

Is military time the same as the 24-hour clock?

Yes, apart from formatting: the 24-hour clock writes 14:30 with a colon, while military time writes 1430 and adds "hours". The hours and minutes are identical.
