Pace to MPH Converter
Convert a running or walking pace in minutes per mile into miles per hour — and get km/h and min/km at the same time.
How it works
mph = 60 ÷ (pace in minutes per mile) · km/h = mph × 1.609344
Pace and speed are reciprocals: pace is minutes per mile, speed is miles per hour. Since there are 60 minutes in an hour, dividing 60 by your minutes-per-mile pace gives miles per hour directly. A faster pace (smaller number) means a higher speed, which is why an 8-minute mile and a 6-minute mile are 7.5 and 10 mph — a big speed jump for a small pace change.
Worked example
An 8:00 per-mile pace is 8 minutes per mile, so speed is 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph. In metric that is 7.5 × 1.609344 ≈ 12.07 km/h, or about a 4:58 per-kilometer pace.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile. A 10-minute mile is 60 ÷ 10 = 6 mph; a 7:30 mile is 60 ÷ 7.5 = 8 mph.
Why isn't twice the pace twice the speed?
Speed is the reciprocal of pace, not proportional to it. Halving your pace time does double your speed, but a small pace change near fast paces moves mph more than the same change at slow paces.
How do I set a treadmill from my pace?
Treadmills use mph (or km/h). Convert your target per-mile pace to mph here and dial that in — an 8:34 mile is about 7.0 mph.
