Treadmill MPH to Pace Calculator
Convert a treadmill belt speed in mph or km/h into your running pace per mile and per km, so console numbers finally make sense.
How it works
Pace per mile = 3600 ÷ speed(mph) · Pace per km = 3600 ÷ speed(km/h)
Treadmill consoles report a speed, but runners think in pace, and converting in your head mid-run is awkward. Because pace is simply the inverse of speed, one mile per hour of belt speed maps to a fixed minutes-per-mile figure. This lets you set the belt to hit an exact goal pace instead of guessing. Note that treadmill effort runs slightly easier than the road at the same number, since there is no air resistance — a 1% incline roughly restores the difference.
Worked example
A belt set to 6.0 mph covers a mile in 3600 ÷ 6 = 600 seconds, or 10:00 per mile. That equals 9.66 km/h, a pace of 6:13 per km, and a 5 km in about 31:04.
Frequently asked questions
Is treadmill pace the same as outdoor pace?
Not quite. Without wind resistance and with the belt assisting turnover, treadmill running is a little easier at the same speed. Many runners set a 1% incline to make the effort match an equivalent outdoor pace.
My treadmill shows km/h — can I still use this?
Yes, switch the unit to km/h and the calculator converts both the mph equivalent and the pace per mile and per km for you.
Why does a small speed change move my pace so much at slow speeds?
Pace is the inverse of speed, so the relationship is non-linear. At low speeds a 0.5 mph change shifts pace far more than the same change at high speeds.
