How it works

Per bite = chews × sec/chew + pause · Meal minutes = bites × per-bite ÷ 60

The gut sends fullness signals that take roughly 20 minutes to register in the brain, so eating fast means finishing before you feel satisfied and reaching for more. This calculator turns chewing count, chew speed and between-bite pauses into a meal duration and checks it against that 20-minute window, then tells you how much longer to pause if you are eating too fast. Slowing down is one of the few weight-management habits that needs no counting at all.

Worked example

30 bites, 25 chews at 0.6 s each plus a 6-second pause is 21 seconds per bite, so the meal lasts about 10.5 minutes — under 20, so lengthening the pause to about 14 seconds would stretch it past the fullness signal.

Frequently asked questions

Why does eating slowly help with weight?

Fullness hormones take around 20 minutes to signal the brain. Eating slowly lets those signals catch up before you overeat, so you feel satisfied on less food without deliberately restricting.

How many times should I chew each bite?

Common guidance is 20–30 chews per bite for most foods, more for tough or fibrous items. The exact number matters less than the habit of chewing thoroughly and not rushing.

What are practical ways to slow down?

Put your utensil down between bites, take a sip of water periodically, eat without screens, and aim to make each meal last at least 20 minutes. Those pauses do most of the work this calculator measures.
