How it works

Improper numerator = (Whole × Denominator) + Numerator · keep the same Denominator

A mixed number splits a value into a whole part and a proper fraction. To merge them, express the whole part in the same-sized pieces as the fraction — multiply it by the denominator — then add the numerator. The denominator stays the same because the size of each piece has not changed.

Worked example

For 2 3/4, multiply the whole number 2 by the denominator 4 to get 8, then add the numerator 3 for 11. The improper fraction is 11/4.

Frequently asked questions

What is an improper fraction?

An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator, such as 11/4. It represents a value of one or more wholes written as a single fraction.

How do I convert back to a mixed number?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number and the remainder over the denominator is the fraction: 11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3, so 2 3/4.

What if the whole number is negative?

The whole number carries the sign of the entire mixed number, so -2 3/4 becomes -11/4. This tool applies the sign to the combined improper fraction.
