How it works

Total boxes = rooms × boxes per room · Packing days = ceil(total boxes ÷ boxes per day) · Buffer = weeks × 7 − packing days

A move works best planned backwards from the fixed move date. First estimate how many boxes you actually have to pack, then divide by a realistic packing pace to get the number of working days it will take. The remaining time is your buffer for booking movers, changing your address and handling utilities — the earlier the buffer runs out, the sooner you need to start.

Worked example

Five rooms at 12 boxes each is 60 boxes. Packing 6 a day takes 10 days. With 8 weeks (56 days) until the move, you have 46 days of buffer, so booking movers around week 4 and starting to pack roughly six weeks out leaves plenty of slack.

Frequently asked questions

When should I book movers?

For a local move, two to four weeks out is usually fine; for a long-distance or summer move, book six to eight weeks ahead because prime dates fill up. This calculator suggests booking around the halfway point of your countdown so you still have alternatives if your first choice is unavailable.

How many boxes will I really need?

A rough rule is 10–15 boxes per furnished room, more for a packed kitchen or a book-heavy study and fewer for a sparse bedroom. Start with the estimate here, then adjust once you begin filling boxes.

How early should I start packing?

Begin with things you rarely use — off-season clothes, books, décor — as soon as the move is confirmed, and leave daily essentials for the last day or two. Spreading it over the buffer shown here avoids an exhausting final-week scramble.
