How it works

Total = electric + gas + water + internet + other · Non-refundable = total − refundable deposits

Connecting utilities at a new address carries one-time charges that are easy to forget in a moving budget: connection fees, equipment costs and refundable security deposits that some providers require until you build payment history. Separating the refundable deposits from the true sunk fees shows both the cash you need on day one and the amount you will never see again.

Worked example

Electric ($150), gas ($100), water ($75), internet ($120) and other ($50) total $495 upfront. If $225 of that is refundable deposits, only $270 is a genuine non-refundable expense — but you still need the full $495 in hand when you move in.

Frequently asked questions

Which utilities charge a deposit?

Electric, gas and water companies often require a refundable deposit if you have no payment history with them or a low credit score. Many refund it after 12 months of on-time payments or apply it to a future bill.

Can I avoid connection fees?

Some providers waive fees for online sign-ups, autopay enrollment or transferring existing service to a new address. It is worth asking, since connection and equipment charges are often negotiable or waivable.

Should setup costs go in my moving budget?

Yes — they hit the same week as movers and the first month of rent, so budgeting for them upfront prevents a cash crunch on move-in day. Only the non-refundable portion is a true long-term cost.
