Utility Bill Split Calculator
Add up electricity, water, gas and internet and split the total among housemates — evenly or per person.
How it works
Total = electricity + water + gas + internet · Per person = total ÷ number of people
Utilities are the classic shared-house headache because bills arrive at different times and in different names. Summing every recurring bill into one monthly total and dividing by the number of housemates gives a single, predictable figure each person contributes — far easier to manage than chasing individual bills. For usage that is genuinely uneven, weight the split or track it separately.
Worked example
Electricity $120, water $60, gas $40 and internet $80 total $300 a month. Split among 3 housemates, each owes $100 — one transfer instead of four separate bills to reconcile.
Frequently asked questions
Should everyone pay the same?
An even split is simplest and works when usage is roughly equal. If one person is home all day running heat and A/C while others travel, consider weighting their share or metering the biggest bill separately.
How do we handle bills in one person's name?
Have that person collect everyone's equal share by a set date each month, then pay the providers. A shared spreadsheet or a bill-splitting app keeps it transparent and avoids one roommate carrying the balance.
What about a security or connection deposit?
Deposits are one-time and refundable, so split them separately from monthly bills and note who fronted them, so that person is reimbursed when the deposit is returned.
