How it works

Fair share = total expense ÷ number of people · Your balance = amount you paid − fair share

After a group trip or dinner, the question is not the total but who owes whom. Everyone's fair share is the total divided by the head count; your balance is simply what you paid minus that share. A positive balance means you fronted more than your part and are owed the difference; a negative balance means you still owe. Settling those individual balances squares the whole group.

Worked example

A $900 group expense split among 3 people is a $300 fair share each. If you paid $500, your balance is 500 − 300 = +$200, so the others together owe you $200 to settle up.

Frequently asked questions

How do we settle up with more than one payer?

Compute each person's balance (paid minus fair share) the same way. People with negative balances pay people with positive balances until every balance is zero — that is exactly what settle-up apps automate.

What if the split is not even?

This uses an even split. For uneven shares — someone skipped a meal or a night — assign each person a custom share that sums to the total, then compare it to what they paid.

Does the order of transfers matter?

No. As long as each person's net balance is settled, the group is square regardless of who pays whom first. Minimizing the number of transfers just saves effort.
