MTG Mana Curve Calculator
Score a Magic: The Gathering deck’s mana curve — average mana value, land ratio and a recommended land count from your spell counts.
How it works
Average MV = Σ(count × mana value) ÷ nonland spells · Land ratio = lands ÷ deck · Suggested lands ≈ deck × (0.34 + 0.03 × avg MV)
A deck’s mana curve is the distribution of its spells across mana costs, and its average mana value tells you how greedy the deck is. Faster, low-curve decks want fewer lands so they draw more action; slower, top-heavy decks need more lands to reliably reach their expensive cards. The suggested-lands figure scales the familiar “about 40% lands” rule of thumb up or down with the curve — treat it as a starting point, then adjust for cheap card draw, mana rocks and dual-purpose lands.
Worked example
A 60-card deck with 8 one-drops, 10 two-drops, 8 threes, 6 fours, 3 fives and 1 six-plus has 36 spells and a total mana value of 8+20+24+24+15+6.5 = 97.5, an average of about 2.71. The heuristic suggests 60 × (0.34 + 0.03 × 2.71) ≈ 24 lands.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as mana value?
Mana value (formerly “converted mana cost”) is the total amount of mana in a card’s cost, ignoring colour. A card costing two generic and one blue has a mana value of 3. Lands have a mana value of 0 and are excluded from the curve here.
Is the suggested land count a hard rule?
No — it is a heuristic. Cheap card draw, mana rocks, cantrips and fetch effects all let you run fewer lands, while double-pipped costs and a top-heavy curve push you higher. Roughly 17 lands for a 40-card Limited deck and 23–25 for 60-card Constructed are common baselines.
Why is the 6+ bucket weighted at 6.5?
Everything costing six or more is grouped into one bucket, so the average uses 6.5 as a representative value for that bucket. If your deck runs many seven- and eight-drops, the true average is slightly higher than shown.
