Numerology is a centuries-old tradition, shown here purely for entertainment: it is not science and it predicts nothing. Each letter gets a number, either from the Pythagorean system (the alphabet in repeating rows of nine) or the older Chaldean system (based on sound, with no letter worth 9). Adding every letter of your name gives the expression or destiny number; the vowels alone give the soul urge (heart’s desire) number, and the consonants give the personality number. Each total is reduced by adding its digits until one digit remains, except the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which are kept. Y is treated as a vowel unless it comes right before a vowel, and you can change that rule. The calculator also shows your first and last name numbers, the numbers missing from your name (karmic lessons), the number that appears most (hidden passion) and any karmic debt totals (13, 14, 16, 19). Add your birth date for the life path, birthday and maturity numbers. Accents are removed, so María is read as Maria.
Worked example
“Jordan Smith” in the Pythagorean system: JORDAN = J1 + O6 + R9 + D4 + A1 + N5 = 26 and SMITH = S1 + M4 + I9 + T2 + H8 = 24. The expression total is 50, and 5 + 0 = 5, the Free Spirit. The vowels O, A and I give 16 → 7 (soul urge), and the consonants give 34 → 7 (personality). The first name reduces to 8 and the last name to 6. No letter is worth 3 or 7, so those are the karmic lessons; 1 appears three times, the hidden passion; and the soul urge total of 16 is a karmic debt number. With a birth date of July 14, 1990, the life path is 7 + 5 + 1 = 13 → 4, and the maturity number is 4 + 5 = 9. In the Chaldean system the same name totals 37 → 1.
Frequently asked questions
Does my numerology number mean anything real?
No. Numerology is a traditional belief system, not science, and it makes no predictions that have held up to testing. Enjoy the keywords as a bit of fun, not as guidance for real decisions.
What are master numbers?
In numerology, 11, 22 and 33 are treated as special and are not reduced to a single digit. This calculator keeps them wherever they appear and gives each its traditional keyword.
Pythagorean or Chaldean — which should I use?
Pythagorean is the more common Western system and assigns 1–9 to the alphabet in order. Chaldean is older, assigns numbers by sound and never uses 9, so it often gives a different result. Switch between them to compare.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant?
Numerologists disagree. The usual rule, used here by default, counts Y as a vowel when it sounds like one (Mary, Lynn) and as a consonant when it comes before a vowel (Yolanda). Under More options you can make it always a vowel or always a consonant.
Which name should I enter?
Traditionally, your full name as written on your birth certificate, including middle names. Many people also try their current or married name to compare. Accents and characters such as Ñ are read as plain letters (N).
What are karmic lessons and hidden passion?
Karmic lessons are the numbers 1–9 that no letter in your name carries; hidden passion is the number that appears most often. Both come from the frequency table, which shows which letters carry each number.
