How it works

Opens = subscribers × open rate · Value per send = (opens ÷ 1,000) × CPM · Monthly = value × sends

Newsletter ads are priced on opens, not raw list size, because an unopened email delivers nothing to a sponsor. Multiply subscribers by your open rate to get real reach, then apply a CPM the way podcasts and display ads do. Engaged, niche B2B lists command far higher CPMs than broad consumer lists — a 20,000-person audience of decision-makers can out-earn a 200,000-person general list because advertisers pay for relevance, not just headcount.

Worked example

A newsletter has 20,000 subscribers and a 40% open rate, so 8,000 people open each issue. At a $40 CPM, one sponsored placement is worth 8,000 ÷ 1,000 × $40 = $320. Running four sponsored sends a month gives about $1,280, or roughly $15,360 a year.

Frequently asked questions

Why price on opens instead of total subscribers?

A sponsor only reaches people who open the email. Pricing on opens (subscribers × open rate) reflects genuine attention, and it protects your rate when open rates are strong even if the list is modest.

What CPM can newsletters charge?

Broad consumer newsletters often see $10–$30 per 1,000 opens, while tightly targeted B2B or professional niches can command $50–$100 or more because the audience is so valuable to advertisers.

Should I count clicks too?

Some sponsors prefer CPC (cost per click) or flat deals with performance bonuses. This calculator uses the common CPM-on-opens model; if you sell on clicks, price using your click-through rate instead.
