How it works

standby pay = standby hours × standby rate · call-out pay = called-out hours × call-out rate · total = standby pay + call-out pay + fixed allowance · effective rate = total ÷ (standby + called-out hours)

On-call pay usually has two parts: a lower standby rate for the hours you are available but not working, and your normal (or premium) hourly rate for the time you are actually called in. Some employers add a flat allowance for carrying the pager on top. This adds all three and also shows the blended rate across every on-call hour, which is a useful way to compare on-call arrangements. Call-out time is often paid at a minimum block (for example a 3-hour minimum per call) — enter the guaranteed hours rather than the clock time if your policy works that way.

Worked example

A weekend on call is 48 standby hours paid at $4/hour, which is $192. During it you are called in for 5 hours at your $33/hour call-out rate, another $165. With no fixed allowance the total is $357 — a blended $6.74 for each of the 53 on-call hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between standby and call-out pay?

Standby (or availability) pay compensates you for being reachable and ready, usually at a reduced rate. Call-out pay covers the hours you are actually summoned to work, at your regular or a premium rate. Together they make up your on-call earnings.

How do call-out minimums work?

Many policies guarantee a minimum number of paid hours each time you are called in — often two to four hours — even for a short task. If yours does, enter the guaranteed hours rather than the actual minutes worked.

Is the fixed allowance taxable?

On-call allowances are generally treated as taxable earnings, but the rules depend on your country and how the payment is structured. Check your payslip and local tax guidance; this tool shows gross pay before tax.
