How it works

Rolls per month = sheets per day × 30.42 ÷ sheets per roll · Days per roll = sheets per roll ÷ sheets per day · Rolls per year = sheets per day × 365 ÷ sheets per roll · Price per roll = pack price ÷ rolls in pack · Cost per 100 sheets = price per roll ÷ sheets per roll × 100

Paper towel use comes down to two numbers: how many sheets the household tears off each day and how many sheets are on a roll. Multiply daily sheets by the days in an average month (365 ÷ 12 = 30.42) and divide by the sheets per roll to get rolls per month; a year is 365 days. Roll sizes vary widely between brands and pack labels. A “double” or “mega” roll is a multiple of that brand’s own regular roll, and some brands use half-size sheets, so the price per roll tells you little. Cost per 100 sheets is the fair comparison (price per roll ÷ sheets per roll × 100); if sheet sizes differ a lot, compare price per square foot printed on the pack instead. Enter a pack price and the number of rolls to work out the price per roll. The result assumes a steady daily use. Track your real use for a week (count the rolls you finish) for a better daily figure.

Worked example

Using 12 sheets a day from a 110-sheet roll, one roll lasts 110 ÷ 12 = 9.2 days. Over an average month that is 12 × 30.42 ÷ 110 = 3.3 rolls (buy 4), and over a year 12 × 365 ÷ 110 = 39.8, or about 40 rolls. At $1.50 a roll that costs $1.36 per 100 sheets, about $4.98 a month and $59.73 a year.

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets are on a roll of paper towels?

It ranges widely, from about 50 sheets on a basic roll to 160 or more on a large roll, and some brands use half-size sheets. Always check the sheet count on the pack, because a cheaper-looking roll with fewer sheets can cost more per sheet.

What is the best way to compare paper towel prices?

Divide the price per roll by the sheets per roll and multiply by 100 to get the cost per 100 sheets, or use the price per square foot on the shelf label when sheet sizes differ. For example, an 8-roll pack at $12 is $1.50 a roll; with 110 sheets a roll that is $1.36 per 100 sheets.

How many paper towel rolls does a family use per month?

At 10–15 sheets a day and about 110 sheets a roll, a household goes through roughly 3 to 4 rolls a month, or 35–50 a year. Heavy users at 30 sheets a day need about 8 rolls a month.

How can I use fewer paper towels?

Keep reusable microfibre or cotton cloths for everyday spills and surface wiping, use the half-sheet size where your roll has it, and reserve paper towels for genuinely messy jobs like grease or raw-meat clean-up. Enter a lower daily figure under More options to see the yearly saving.
