How it works

Usable bag = bag size × fill% · Bags/day = people × waste/person ÷ usable bag · Bags/month = bags/day × 30

Bag consumption is your household’s daily waste volume divided by how much you actually put in each bag before tying it off — most people close a bag at around 80% so it can be lifted without tearing. Recycling and composting pull material out of the general-waste stream, lowering the waste-per-person figure and, with it, your bag count. Right-sizing your bags to your bin avoids paying for capacity you never fill.

Worked example

A household of 3 at 1 gallon of waste each per day generates 3 gallons a day. Filling a 13-gallon bag to 80% gives 10.4 usable gallons, so a bag lasts about 3.5 days — roughly 8.6 bags a month.

Frequently asked questions

How much trash does a person generate?

By weight, the average person throws out around 4–5 lb of municipal waste a day, but by volume — which is what fills bags — it is closer to 1 gallon a day after recycling and composting. Volume varies far more than weight, so adjust the figure to your own habits.

Why not fill bags to 100%?

An over-stuffed bag is heavy, hard to lift out of the bin and prone to splitting at the seams. Tying off at roughly 80% keeps the bag manageable and reduces messy failures, which is why this calculator lets you set a fill level.

How do I use fewer bags?

Divert recyclables and food scraps out of general waste, flatten bulky packaging, and match your bag size to your bin so every bag is genuinely full before it goes out.
