Popcorn for a Movie Night Calculator
Pop exactly enough for movie night — popped volume, kernels to buy, and the butter and salt to go with it.
How it works
Popped cups = people × bowls × cups/bowl · Kernels = popped ÷ 30 (cups) · Butter ≈ 1 tbsp/bowl · Salt ≈ ⅛ tsp/cup
A cup of un-popped kernels yields roughly 30 cups of popped popcorn, so working back from how much everyone will eat tells you how little you actually need to buy. A movie-size bowl is about 4 cups popped, and most people go through a bowl or two across a film. Butter and salt scale with the popped volume, not the kernels.
Worked example
For 6 people at 1.5 bowls of 4 cups each: 6 × 1.5 × 4 = 36 cups popped. That is 36 ÷ 30 ≈ 1.2 cups of kernels (about 10 oz), with roughly 9 tbsp of butter and 4.5 tsp of salt.
Frequently asked questions
How much popcorn per person for a movie?
About 4–8 cups of popped popcorn per person, or one to two movie-size bowls. Big snackers and long films push toward the higher end.
How many kernels make a big bowl?
Roughly 2 tablespoons (about 1 ounce) of kernels pops into about 4 cups — one movie bowl. A cup of kernels makes around 30 cups popped.
How much butter should I melt?
About 1 tablespoon of melted butter per movie-size bowl gives a light coating. Drizzle in stages and toss so it distributes instead of pooling at the bottom.
