Ramadan Dates Calculator (When Does Ramadan Start and End?)
Find when Ramadan starts and ends in any year from 1900 to 2100: the first fast, Laylat al-Qadr, the last fast and Eid al-Fitr, with a day-by-day Ramadan calendar and a moon-sighting adjustment.
How it works
Tabular Islamic calendar: day number of 1 Ramadan of Hijri year H = 1 + ⌈29.5 × 8⌉ + 354 × (H − 1) + ⌊(3 + 11H) ÷ 30⌋ + 1,948,439 (Julian Day Number) · Hijri leap years (355 days) are years 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26 and 29 of each 30-year cycle · Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days; Eid al-Fitr is 1 Shawwal
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, which is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan moves earlier every year and cycles through all seasons in about 33 years. The calculator uses the arithmetic (tabular) Islamic calendar, which matches the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia for the start of Ramadan in recent years. In practice, each country or community starts and ends the fast when the new crescent moon is seen or officially announced, which can shift the dates by one day — use the adjustment to see that case. Every day of Ramadan begins at sunset the evening before.
Worked example
For 2027 with no sighting adjustment, 1 Ramadan 1448 AH falls on Monday, February 8, 2027, so the first tarawih prayer is on the evening of Sunday, February 7. Laylat al-Qadr (the 27th night) begins on the evening of Friday, March 5; the last fast is Monday, March 8 if the month has 29 days or Tuesday, March 9 if it has 30; and Eid al-Fitr is Wednesday, March 10, 2027 by the calculated calendar (Tuesday, March 9 after a 29-day month).

Frequently asked questions
When does Ramadan 2027 start?
By the calculated calendar (which matches Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar), the first fast of Ramadan 2027 is Monday, February 8, 2027, with tarawih prayers starting the evening before. Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday, March 9 or Wednesday, March 10, 2027, depending on the moon sighting.
Why does Ramadan start on different days in different countries?
The Islamic month begins when the new crescent moon is sighted after sunset. Some countries follow an astronomical calendar (such as Umm al-Qura), others require a local sighting, so the first fast can differ by a day between countries or mosques.
How long is Ramadan?
Ramadan has 29 or 30 days, depending on when the next crescent moon is seen. The fast is kept each day from dawn (fajr) until sunset (maghrib).
When is Laylat al-Qadr?
Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power) is sought in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan; many communities observe it on the 27th night, which begins at sunset after the 26th day of fasting.
How many days earlier is Ramadan each year?
About 10 to 12 days, because 12 lunar months last about 354 days. Over roughly 33 years Ramadan moves through every season, and in some years (for example 2030) it begins twice in the same Gregorian year.
