Rank of Values Calculator
Rank a list of numbers from highest to lowest (or lowest to highest), with average ranks for ties — the standard statistical ranking.
How it works
Sort the values, assign positions 1…n; tied values receive the average of their positions
Ranking replaces each value with its position after sorting. Ties are handled with fractional (average) ranks: if two values would occupy positions 4 and 5, both receive rank 4.5, so the ranks still sum to 1 + 2 + … + n. This is the ranking used by Spearman correlation and rank-based tests, and it keeps the total rank fixed regardless of how many ties occur.
Worked example
For 50, 20, 40, 20, 30 ranked highest-first: 50 is rank 1, 40 is rank 2, 30 is rank 3, and the two 20s would take positions 4 and 5, so each gets (4 + 5) ÷ 2 = 4.5. The ranks in input order are 1, 4.5, 2, 4.5, 3.

Frequently asked questions
How are ties handled?
Tied values receive the average of the positions they span — two values tied for 4th and 5th both get 4.5. This is the standard "fractional rank" method.
Can I rank smallest-first?
Yes. Switch the order option to "Lowest = rank 1" and the smallest value receives rank 1 instead of the largest.
