Raw Score to Scaled Score Calculator
Convert a raw test score into a scaled score with a simple linear equating between the two ranges.
How it works
Scaled = scaledMin + (raw − rawMin) ÷ (rawMax − rawMin) × (scaledMax − scaledMin)
Scaled scores let results from different test forms be compared on one common yardstick. The simplest equating is linear: find where the raw score sits as a fraction of the raw range, then place it at the same fraction of the scaled range. Real exams often use non-linear equating so that a given raw point is worth more scaled points in some regions than others, but the linear model is a transparent first approximation and exactly matches tests that publish a straight-line conversion.
Worked example
With a raw range of 0–60 mapping to a scaled range of 200–800, a raw 45 is 45 ÷ 60 = 75% of the way up. The scaled score is 200 + 0.75 × 600 = 200 + 450 = 650.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just report the raw score?
Because different test forms vary slightly in difficulty. Scaling adjusts for that so a 650 on one form means the same ability as a 650 on another, even if the raw points differ.
Is real scaling always linear?
No. Many standardized tests use equipercentile or item-response-theory equating, which bends the conversion curve. Use this linear tool when your test provides a straight-line conversion or when you want a quick estimate.
What if my raw score is below the minimum?
The calculator clamps the fraction to the 0–100% range, so a score below the stated minimum returns the minimum scaled score rather than an impossible value.
