How it works

Percent complete = done ÷ total × 100 · Remaining = total − done

Percent complete is the running total divided by the target, expressed as a percentage. It is the simplest progress metric there is, which is exactly why progress bars, fundraising thermometers and burndown charts all use it. Displaying the amount still remaining alongside the percentage keeps the goal concrete rather than abstract.

Worked example

On a 500-page reading target, finishing 340 pages gives 340 ÷ 500 = 68% complete, with 160 pages remaining.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when I have done more than the total?

The percentage is capped at 100% for display, and the summary notes how far you have gone past the target so an over-run is still visible.

Does the "amount" have to be a count of tasks?

No — it works for any shared unit: dollars raised toward a goal, miles driven of a trip, words written of a manuscript. Just keep the "done" and "total" in the same units.

How is this different from percent change?

Percent complete measures a part against a fixed whole. Percent change measures growth or shrinkage between two values and can exceed 100% or go negative.
