How it works

superscore = highest EBRW across all sittings + highest Math across all sittings

A superscore does not average your attempts — it stitches together the single best section scores you have ever earned, even if they came from different test dates. Because the two sections are scored independently, a strong Math day and a separate strong Reading day both count in full. Colleges that superscore do this automatically from your submitted reports, which is why sitting the SAT more than once can only help under that policy.

Worked example

Sitting 1 was EBRW 620 / Math 640 (1260); sitting 2 was EBRW 660 / Math 610 (1270); sitting 3 was EBRW 640 / Math 680 (1320). The best EBRW is 660 and the best Math is 680, so the superscore is 660 + 680 = 1340 — 20 points above the best single day of 1320.

Frequently asked questions

Do all colleges superscore the SAT?

No. Many do, some use only your highest single-sitting total, and a few consider every score. Check each school's testing policy — this tool shows both your superscore and your best single sitting so you can see either way.

Does superscoring mix in the essay or subject tests?

No. The superscore is built only from the two current SAT sections, EBRW and Math, each out of 800 for a 1600 total. The optional essay and the retired SAT Subject Tests are reported separately and are not part of it.

Should I retake the SAT to raise my superscore?

If one section is clearly weaker, a retake can lift just that section without risking the other, since only your best of each is kept. Weigh the cost and prep time against how many points a higher section would realistically add.
