How it works

Natal Saturn = geocentric ecliptic longitude of Saturn at noon UT on the birth date (JPL approximate Keplerian elements, light-time, precession to the equinox of date) · return = each date Saturn's longitude again equals the natal value, searched about 29.46, 58.9 and 88.4 years after birth · retrograde loops can give 1 or 3 exact passes per return

Saturn takes about 29.46 years to circle the Sun, so roughly every 29½ years it returns to the zodiac position it occupied when you were born. Astrologers call this the Saturn return and link the first one, in your late twenties, to a period of maturing and big life decisions; the second comes around 58–59 and the third around 88. Because Saturn appears to move backward (retrograde) for about four and a half months each year, it often crosses your natal degree three times. The positions are computed astronomically (about ±0.1°, a few days in date); the astrological meaning is folklore offered for entertainment.

Worked example

Born on March 15, 1997, natal Saturn was at 8°12′ Aries. Saturn returns to that degree first on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 (age 29.1), crosses it again while retrograde on November 25, 2026 and a third time on December 26, 2026 — 3 exact passes. The second Saturn return arrives on June 12, 2055, at age 58.2.

Frequently asked questions

At what age is the Saturn return?

The first Saturn return happens at about 29 to 30 years of age, the second at about 58 to 59 and the third at about 88. The exact date depends on where Saturn was when you were born.

How long does a Saturn return last?

Astrologers usually count the whole period Saturn spends in your natal sign, about two and a half years, with the exact return (or three exact passes, due to retrograde motion) somewhere within it.

Why are there three dates for my Saturn return?

Saturn moves forward, then appears to go backward for about 140 days each year as Earth overtakes it, then forward again. If your natal degree lies inside that loop, Saturn crosses it three times — direct, retrograde and direct.

Does the time of birth matter?

Very little. Saturn moves only about 2 minutes of arc per day, so the birth date alone gives the return within a few days.
