Side Hustle Goal Calculator
Work out how many weeks of side-hustle hours it takes to reach a savings goal, after fees and taxes eat into what you keep.
How it works
Net weekly = rate × hours × (1 − fees%) · Weeks to goal = goal ÷ net weekly · Total hours = weeks × hours
A side hustle only builds savings as fast as what you keep, not what you bill. Platform fees, supplies and the taxes you owe on self-employment income all skim off the top, so the honest figure is net weekly earnings. Divide the goal by that net figure to see how many weeks of steady effort it takes. The total-hours number is a useful reality check: it reframes the goal as a time commitment, which is often what actually decides whether a side hustle is worth it.
Worked example
You want $5,000, earn $25 an hour, and can spare 8 hours a week — $200 gross. After a 25% bite for fees and taxes you keep $150 a week. At that pace you hit $5,000 in 5,000 ÷ 150 = 34 weeks, roughly 7.7 months and about 267 hours of work.
Frequently asked questions
Why set aside a percentage for taxes?
Side-hustle income is usually self-employment income, and no employer withholds tax on it. Setting aside 20–30% as you go means you are not caught short at tax time. Adjust the cut to match your bracket and any platform fees.
What counts toward the fee-and-tax percentage?
Anything that reduces what you actually keep: marketplace or app commissions, payment-processing fees, supplies and mileage, and the income and self-employment tax you owe on the profit.
How can I reach my goal faster?
Raise your effective rate, add hours, or cut fees and expenses. Because weeks-to-goal is goal divided by net weekly, a higher net weekly figure shortens the timeline proportionally — doubling what you keep halves the weeks.
