Somatic Cell Count (SCC) to Linear Score Calculator & Milk Loss
Convert a cow’s somatic cell count (SCC) into the DHI linear score (SCS), read the udder-health status and estimate the milk lost per lactation to subclinical mastitis.
How it works
Linear score (SCS) = log₂(SCC ÷ 100,000) + 3 · Milk loss per lactation ≈ (SCS − 2) × 200 lb (first lactation) or × 400 lb (later lactations), for SCS above 2
Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) records convert somatic cell counts to a 0–9 linear score because the score relates linearly to lost milk: every doubling of the cell count adds one point. A score of 4 corresponds to 200,000 cells/mL, the level above which subclinical mastitis is likely. The National Mastitis Council fact sheet estimates that each point above 2 costs about 200 lb (91 kg) of milk in first-lactation cows and 400 lb (181 kg) in older cows over a lactation.
Worked example
A mature cow with 200,000 cells/mL: SCS = log₂(200,000 ÷ 100,000) + 3 = 1 + 3 = 4.0 — "Borderline — monitor this cow". She is 2 points above 2, so the expected loss is 2 × 400 lb = 800 lb, or about 363 kg of milk over the lactation (1.2 kg/day).

Frequently asked questions
What somatic cell count indicates mastitis?
An individual cow above about 200,000 cells/mL (linear score 4 or more) most likely has an infected quarter (subclinical mastitis). Healthy, uninfected cows usually stay below 100,000 cells/mL.
Why use a linear score instead of the raw cell count?
Cell counts are very skewed — one cow at 3 million can distort a herd average. The logarithmic linear score turns that into a 0–9 scale where each point is a doubling of the count and corresponds to a similar amount of lost milk, so scores can be averaged fairly.
What is a good herd average linear score?
Well-managed herds average below about 3.0, with fewer than 10–15% of cows above a score of 4. A rising herd average points to new infections in the milking routine, bedding or milking machine.
What bulk tank SCC limit applies to milk sales?
Limits vary by country: the European Union and many importers use 400,000 cells/mL, while the US legal limit for Grade A milk is 750,000. Many processors pay premiums for much lower counts.
