How it works

Climbing VO2 (ml/kg/min) = 3.5 + 0.2 × f + 1.8 × H × f · descending VO2 = 3.5 + 0.2 × f + 0.6 × H × f · kcal = VO2 × kg × minutes ÷ 1000 × 5 (f = steps/min, H = step height in m)

The calculator applies the ACSM stepping equation to stairs: a horizontal cost of 0.2 ml O2/kg per step, a vertical cost of 1.8 ml O2/kg per metre lifted, and 3.5 ml/kg/min of resting metabolism. Walking down costs about one third of the vertical work of going up — the same 1.33 factor ACSM builds into its bench-stepping equation. Oxygen is converted to energy at about 5 kcal per litre. Results are gross calories, including what you would burn at rest.

Worked example

A 70 kg person climbs 300 standard 17 cm steps at 60 steps/min, taking 5:00. VO2 = 3.5 + 0.2 × 60 + 1.8 × 0.17 × 60 = 3.5 + 12 + 18.36 = 33.86 ml/kg/min (9.7 METs). Calories = 33.86 × 70 × 5 ÷ 1000 × 5 = 59 kcal for 51 m — about 17 floors.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories does climbing one flight of stairs burn?

A flight of about 16 steps burns roughly 3 kcal for a 70 kg person at a steady pace, and a little more for heavier people. That is small per flight, but 10 flights a day add up to around 1,000 kcal a month.

Does climbing faster burn more calories?

Per step, only slightly — most of the cost is lifting your body upward, which is the same at any speed. Climbing faster burns calories per minute much faster, so you get the same work done in less time.

Does walking down the stairs count?

Yes, but it costs far less than climbing — roughly a third of the vertical work. Choose “Climb and walk back down” to add the descent at the same step rate.

Is stair climbing the same as a stair machine?

A stepper or stair-mill uses the same mechanics, so the equation is a reasonable guide when you know the step rate. Leaning on the handrails reduces the work and the calories considerably.
