Step Goal for Weight Loss Calculator
Work out the daily step goal that creates the calorie burn needed to hit a target weekly weight loss.
How it works
kcal/step ≈ 0.53 × weight(lb) ÷ 2,000 · extra steps = (weekly loss × 3,500 ÷ 7) ÷ kcal per step
Walking burns roughly 0.53 calories per pound of body weight per mile, and a mile is about 2,000 steps, so each step costs a small, weight-dependent number of calories. To lose weight through steps alone, you need enough daily steps to create the deficit that matches your weekly target (using about 3,500 kcal per pound). This tool turns a target weekly loss into the extra steps a day required and adds them to your current baseline.
Worked example
A 170 lb person burns about 0.045 kcal per step. Losing 1 lb a week needs a 500 kcal daily deficit, so roughly 11,100 extra steps a day — on top of a 4,000-step baseline, about a 15,100-step goal.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really lose weight just by walking?
Yes, but the step counts get large — often 10,000+ extra steps a day for a pound a week. Combining walking with a small calorie reduction reaches the same deficit with far less time on your feet.
Why does calories per step depend on my weight?
Heavier bodies burn more energy to move the same distance, so each step costs more calories. The tool scales the per-step burn to your body weight.
Does the "10,000 steps" rule guarantee weight loss?
No. 10,000 steps is a general activity target, not a weight-loss prescription. Whether you lose weight depends on total calories in versus out, of which steps are only one part.
