Swim SWOLF Score Calculator
Combine your strokes and seconds per length into a SWOLF efficiency score, normalised to 25 m so you can track it across pools.
How it works
SWOLF = seconds per length + strokes per length · 25 m-normalised = SWOLF × (25 ÷ pool length)
SWOLF ("swim golf") adds the time for a length to the strokes it took, rewarding you for covering the distance faster and with fewer, more powerful strokes. Like golf, a lower score is better, and you can lower it either by swimming quicker or by gliding further per stroke. Because a 50 m length naturally has a bigger raw score than a 25 m one, normalising to 25 m lets you compare sessions in different pools.
Worked example
A 25 m length in 20 seconds with 18 strokes gives SWOLF = 20 + 18 = 38. Trim two strokes and a second and it falls to 35 — the same distance covered more efficiently.
Frequently asked questions
Is a lower or higher SWOLF better?
Lower is better — it means you covered the length in fewer seconds and fewer strokes. Watch it as a trend over time rather than chasing a single target, since the "good" range depends on stroke, height and pool length.
What is a good SWOLF for freestyle?
In a 25 m pool, roughly 40+ is developing, mid-30s is solid, and low-30s or under is elite. Taller swimmers get a small advantage because a longer reach covers more distance per stroke.
Should I just take fewer strokes to lower it?
Not on its own — gliding to cut strokes usually slows you down and can leave the score unchanged. The goal is the best combination, holding speed while making each stroke count.
