How it works

Tacos = guests × per-guest · tortillas = tacos × 1.1 · meat = tacos × oz-per-taco ÷ 16 (2.5 oz, 1.75 oz if paired with beans)

A taco bar is easy to scale once you fix tacos per guest — three is the usual sweet spot. Each taco takes about 2.5 ounces of cooked meat, dropping to under 2 ounces when you also offer beans. Buy about 10% extra tortillas for the ones that tear, and set out roughly half a pound of cheese and a quarter cup of salsa per few guests. Because guests build their own, having toppings run out is worse than a little leftover meat.

Worked example

For 20 guests at 3 tacos each: 60 tacos total. Tortillas = ceil(60 × 1.1) = 66. Meat = 60 × 2.5 ÷ 16 ≈ 9.4 lb, with about 2.25 lb of cheese.

Frequently asked questions

How many tacos per person?

Three is the standard estimate for a build-your-own bar. Hungry adults may eat four while kids often stop at two, so three per guest averages out well for a mixed crowd.

How much meat per taco?

About 2.5 ounces of cooked, seasoned meat per taco. If you also put out beans, drop to roughly 1.75 ounces of meat since people mix the two.

What toppings should I put out?

Beyond meat and tortillas: shredded cheese, lettuce, diced tomato, onion, salsa, sour cream, guacamole and lime. Toppings are cheap and disappear fast, so err on the generous side there rather than on the meat.
