How it works

5K pace = 5K time ÷ distance · Tempo pace ≈ 5K pace + 30 sec/mile · Easy pace ≈ 5K pace + 90 sec/mile

Tempo, or threshold, runs are sustained efforts at the fastest pace you could hold for about an hour — "comfortably hard." A recent 5K is a convenient anchor because threshold pace sits close to it: about 25–35 seconds per mile slower than 5K race pace for most runners. Running tempos at this "just right" intensity builds the ability to clear lactate and hold speed, whereas running them too fast turns every session into a race and blunts recovery.

Worked example

A 25:00 5K is 8:03 per mile (5:00 per km). Tempo pace is roughly 8:03 + 0:30 = 8:33 per mile (about 5:19 per km), while easy running sits near 9:33 per mile.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is tempo pace?

Tempo (threshold) pace is the effort you could sustain for roughly an hour of hard racing — around your lactate threshold. It should feel controlled and "comfortably hard," not an all-out sprint.

How long should a tempo run be?

Continuous tempo efforts are commonly 20–40 minutes at threshold pace, often bracketed by an easy warm-up and cool-down. Longer threshold work is frequently broken into cruise intervals with short recoveries.

Should I use my current or goal 5K time?

Use a recent, honest 5K time so the paces match your current fitness. Training off a goal time you have not yet achieved makes the sessions too fast and undermines the workout.
