How it works

Total = bill × (1 + tip%) · Share = total ÷ people · Rounded share = round up to the chosen step

The tip is a percentage of the pre-tip bill; adding it gives the grand total, which then divides evenly across the group. Rounding each share up to the next dollar or five dollars makes payment simpler and slightly boosts the tip, since the collected total then exceeds the exact bill. The calculator shows that small overage so you can see exactly how much extra the rounding adds.

Worked example

A $120 bill with an 18% tip is $120 + $21.60 = $141.60. Split four ways that is $35.40 each. Rounded up to the next dollar, each pays $36, collecting $144 — about $2.40 more than the exact total, which just pads the tip.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?

This calculator applies the tip to the bill amount you enter. In the US it is customary to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, so enter that figure if you want to exclude tax from the tip.

Why does rounding collect more than the bill?

Rounding each share up means the group pays slightly more than the exact total. The difference, shown as “extra over the bill,” simply increases the effective tip.

How do I split when shares are uneven?

This tool splits evenly. If people ordered very differently, use an uneven bill split calculator that divides by each person’s share of the order.
