Uneven Bill Split Calculator
Split a shared bill in proportion to what each of three people ordered, then add tip and tax fairly on top.
How it works
Share of bill = person’s order ÷ subtotal · Person pays = order × (1 + tip%+tax%)
An even split overcharges the light eater and undercharges the big spender. A proportional split gives everyone the same percentage add-on for tip and tax but scales it to what they actually ordered, so the person who ordered more of the food also covers more of the shared charges. Each person effectively pays their order times one plus the combined tip-and-tax rate.
Worked example
Orders of $30, $50 and $20 total $100. With 20% for tip and tax the total is $120. Person 2, who ordered half the food, pays $60; Person 1 pays $36 and Person 3 pays $24 — each order simply multiplied by 1.20.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from an even split?
An even split divides the total equally regardless of what each person ordered. A proportional split charges each person for their own items plus their fair share of tip and tax, which is fairer when orders differ a lot.
Why apply the same tip and tax percentage to everyone?
Tip and tax scale with the bill, so charging each person the same percentage on their own order keeps the split proportional and adds up exactly to the grand total.
What if someone ordered nothing?
Enter 0 for that person and they pay nothing; the remaining orders still split the tip and tax among themselves in proportion.
