TOEFL iBT Score Calculator: 1–6 Overall Band, 0–120 Total and CEFR Level

Work out your TOEFL iBT overall score on the 1–6 band scale used since 21 January 2026 (average of four sections, rounded to the nearest half band) or your 0–120 total for older tests, with the ETS conversion between the two scales, CEFR level, an approximate IELTS equivalent and a check against a university’s minimum total and section scores.

How it works

Tests from 21 Jan 2026: overall band = (Reading + Listening + Speaking + Writing) ÷ 4, rounded to the nearest 0.5 (averages ending in .25 or .75 round up) · Older tests: total = sum of four 0–30 sections (0–120) · 1–6 ↔ 0–120 and CEFR from the ETS concordance tables

Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT reports each of the four sections and the overall score on a 1–6 scale in half-point steps. The overall score is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest half band, so an average of 5.25 becomes 5.5 and 5.125 becomes 5. During the two-year transition (to January 2028) score reports also give the CEFR level and a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale, the midpoint of the matching range (ETS gives 4.5 → 90 as the example). Tests taken before that date were scored 0–30 per section, and the total is the plain sum (0–120). Those scores remain valid for two years, so switch to the 0–30 scale to add them up and see the 1–6 band ETS treats them as. The section table converts each section with its own ETS range, because the same 0–30 score maps to different bands in different sections (22 is a 4.5 in Reading but a 5 in Listening). The CEFR levels follow ETS: 6 = C2, 5–5.5 = C1, 4–4.5 = B2, 3–3.5 = B1, 2–2.5 = A2, 1–1.5 = A1. The IELTS figure is read from the ETS TOEFL-to-IELTS comparison and is only a guide; institutions set their own equivalences.

Worked example

New scale: Reading 4.5, Listening 5, Speaking 4 and Writing 4.5 add up to 18, and 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5, so the overall score is 4.5 out of 6, CEFR B2. On the old scale that matches 86–94 (midpoint about 90), roughly IELTS 6.5. A total of 19 band points (average 4.75) would round up to 5. Old scale: 22 in each section gives 22 × 4 = 88 out of 120, which is in the 86–94 range and so also equals 4.5 on the 1–6 scale.

Frequently asked questions

How is the new TOEFL overall score calculated?

Add the four section bands, divide by 4 and round to the nearest half band. Averages ending in .25 or .75 round up, so 4, 4.5, 4.5 and 5 (average 4.5) give 4.5, and 4.5, 5, 5 and 5.5 (average 5) give 5, while 4.5, 4.5, 5 and 5 (average 4.75) give 5.

What is 90 on the new TOEFL scale?

A 0–120 total of 86–94 equals 4.5 on the 1–6 scale (CEFR B2). 100 is in the 95–106 range, which is 5 (C1), and 80 is in the 72–85 range, which is 4 (B2).

Are my old TOEFL 0–120 scores still valid?

Yes. TOEFL scores are valid for two years, so scores from tests before 21 January 2026 can be sent until early 2028. Many universities list both a 0–120 and a 1–6 minimum during the transition.

What TOEFL score do universities require?

It varies. Many undergraduate programs ask for 80 on the 0–120 scale (about 4 on the new scale), and competitive graduate programs often want 90–100 (about 4.5–5) with a minimum in each section. Always check the specific program.

Is the TOEFL total an average like IELTS?

Since 2026, yes: the 1–6 overall score is an average of the sections, like the IELTS band. On the old scale it was a sum of four 0–30 sections, which is why old totals run to 120.

What TOEFL band equals IELTS 6.5 or 7?

In the ETS comparison table IELTS 6.5 lines up with a TOEFL total of 4.5 and IELTS 7 with 5. Equivalences set by individual universities can differ.
