How it works

Straight = ⌊W ÷ pallet width⌋ × ⌊L ÷ pallet length⌋ · turned = ⌊W ÷ pallet length⌋ × ⌊L ÷ pallet width⌋ · pinwheel (if length + width ≤ W) = ⌊L ÷ length⌋ + ⌊L ÷ width⌋ · floor = best of these lane mixes · tiers = ⌊H ÷ pallet height⌋ · pallets = min(floor × tiers, payload ÷ pallet weight)

A 53 ft dry van is about 630 in long and 100 in wide inside. Loaded straight (48 in side along the trailer), two 48 × 40 in pallets sit side by side in 13 rows for 26 pallets. Turned (40 in side along the trailer, 96 in across), 15 rows fit, for 30. A pinwheel mixes one lane of each and gives 28; it is used when the turned layout is too tight for the forklift or the pallets overhang. The calculator tries every mix of lengthwise and turned lanes across the width and keeps the best. Height decides how many tiers fit, but only stackable freight should be double-stacked, and the door opening is usually a few inches lower than the inside height. Weight often limits before space does: with 80,000 lb gross allowed on US interstates, a tractor and dry van leave roughly 42,000–45,000 lb for freight, less in a reefer. Containers are narrower (about 92 in or 2.35 m inside), which is why a 40 ft box takes about 20 GMA pallets but 23–25 Euro pallets, and a 13.6 m European trailer takes 33–34 Euro pallets or 26 industrial ones. All results use typical inside dimensions. Measure your equipment, or use Custom dimensions, for a load plan you will commit to.

Worked example

48 × 40 in pallets, 50 in tall and 1,200 lb each, in a 53 ft dry van (630 × 100 × 110 in) with no extra clearance: straight gives 2 × 13 = 26, turned gives 2 × 15 = 30 and pinwheel 13 + 15 = 28, so 30 floor spots. Two tiers fit under 110 in (⌊110 ÷ 50⌋ = 2), so 60 pallets fit by space, but 45,000 lb ÷ 1,200 lb = 37 pallets is the weight limit. The answer is 37 pallets, weighing 44,400 lb; to fill all 60 spots each pallet could weigh at most 750 lb.

Frequently asked questions

How many pallets fit in a 53 ft trailer?

With standard 48 × 40 in pallets: 26 loaded straight, 30 turned and 28 pinwheeled on the floor. Double-stacking stackable freight doubles that to 52–60, but weight usually limits heavy loads first.

How many pallets fit in a 48 ft trailer?

With about 570 in of inside length, 22 pallets fit straight and 28 turned. Trailers with a full 576 in inside take 24 straight. Measure yours, or enter its dimensions under Custom.

How many pallets fit in a 20 ft or 40 ft container?

Containers are about 92 in (2.35 m) wide, so 48 × 40 in pallets fit 9 in a 20 ft and 20 in a 40 ft using a pinwheel layout. Euro pallets (1200 × 800 mm) fit 11 and 23–25, and 1200 × 1000 mm pallets about 9 and 21–22, depending on the exact inside dimensions.

Why does the reefer hold fewer pallets?

Insulation and the refrigeration unit shorten and narrow the box (about 612 × 98 in) and the floor is ribbed. Reefer payloads are also lower because the unit and insulation add weight.

What is the difference between straight, turned and pinwheel loading?

Straight puts the long side of the pallet along the trailer, turned puts the short side along it, and pinwheel mixes the two side by side. For 48 × 40 in pallets in a 100 in wide trailer, turned fits the most, but it needs pallets that can be picked from the 48 in side.

How do I know whether weight or space limits my load?

Divide your payload limit by the loaded pallet weight and compare it with the pallets that fit by space. In a 53 ft van with 45,000 lb of payload, pallets heavier than about 750 lb hit the weight limit before 60 double-stacked spots are full, and pallets over 1,500 lb hit it before 30 floor spots.
