Units Per Transaction (UPT) Calculator
Calculate units per transaction (UPT), average transaction value (ATV) and average unit retail (AUR) for a store, and see how much extra revenue a small rise in items per sale would bring.
How it works
UPT = units sold ÷ transactions · ATV = net sales ÷ transactions · AUR = net sales ÷ units sold · ATV = UPT × AUR · Extra sales from +0.1 UPT = 0.1 × AUR × transactions
Units per transaction (also called items per transaction or basket size) is a core retail KPI showing how many items the average customer buys per visit. Because average transaction value equals UPT × average unit retail, raising UPT through add-ons, bundles, displays and staff suggestions lifts sales without needing more customers. Count returns consistently (net of returns is most common) and use the same period for all three inputs.
Worked example
A store sold 1,800 items in 750 transactions for $54,000. UPT = 1,800 ÷ 750 = 2.40 items per sale, ATV = $54,000 ÷ 750 = $72.00 and AUR = $54,000 ÷ 1,800 = $30.00. Lifting UPT by just 0.1 (to 2.50) would add 0.1 × $30.00 × 750 = $2,250.00 in sales.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate UPT in retail?
Divide the number of items sold by the number of transactions in the same period. 1,800 items over 750 receipts is a UPT of 2.4.
What is a good UPT?
It depends heavily on the category: grocery baskets run 10+ items, apparel stores often 2–4, and high-ticket electronics or furniture close to 1. Compare against your own history and similar stores, and track the trend.
What is the difference between UPT and ATV?
UPT counts items per sale; ATV (or average ticket) measures money per sale. ATV = UPT × average unit retail, so you can grow ATV by selling more items or pricier items.
How can I increase units per transaction?
Train staff on add-on suggestions, merchandise complementary products together, use bundles and multi-buy offers, place impulse items at checkout and set free-shipping or gift thresholds slightly above the current average basket.
