Upwork Freelancer Fee Calculator
Calculate your real Upwork take-home after the freelancer service fee and any withdrawal fee, plus the rate to bill to hit a target — editable rates.
How it works
Earnings = amount × (1 − service fee%) · Net = earnings − withdrawal fee · Bill-to-net = target ÷ (1 − service fee%)
Upwork now charges freelancers a flat service fee — 10% on most contracts since 2023, replacing the old sliding 20/10/5% scale. It is deducted from your billings before payout, so a $1,000 contract earns $900. A withdrawal fee may apply when you move money to your bank or PayPal. To hit a target take-home, divide it by (1 − fee) to get the amount to bill. Everything here is editable in case Upwork changes the rate or your account uses different terms; enterprise or legacy contracts can vary.
Worked example
A $1,000 fixed-price contract at the flat 10% fee: Upwork takes $100, so you earn $900 — 90% of the contract. To actually receive $1,000, bill $1,000 ÷ 0.90 = $1,111.11. A $2 bank-withdrawal fee would leave $898 net from the original contract.
Frequently asked questions
What is Upwork’s freelancer fee now?
Since May 2023 Upwork charges a flat 10% freelancer service fee on most contracts, replacing the earlier tiered 20%/10%/5% structure that depended on lifetime billings with a client. Some contract types and enterprise arrangements differ, so edit the rate if yours is not 10%.
How do I set a rate that nets what I want?
Divide your desired take-home by (1 − the fee). To keep $900 at a 10% fee, bill $900 ÷ 0.90 = $1,000. This bill-to-net figure is shown in the results so you can quote clients a rate that leaves you whole after Upwork’s cut.
Are there fees beyond the service fee?
Withdrawing earnings can cost a small amount depending on the method (direct to bank, PayPal or wire), and clients — not you — pay any marketplace or payment-processing fee on their side. Enter your withdrawal fee to see the true net; connection/“Connects” costs to bid are separate and not modeled here.
