How it works

Fee = contract amount × fee% · You keep = contract amount − fee

Upwork deducts a freelancer service fee from your earnings on each contract or milestone. It has moved to a flat 10% on most contracts, replacing the older sliding scale that charged more on the first portion of a client relationship and less after. This calculator shows the fee and your take-home, and to price a project so you net a target you divide the goal by one minus the fee rate. The percentage is editable so you can model the flat rate, a legacy sliding tier, or any future change.

Worked example

On a $1,000 milestone at the flat 10% fee, Upwork takes $100, so you keep $900. To net $1,000 after the fee, bid 1,000 ÷ 0.90 = $1,111.11.

Frequently asked questions

Is Upwork’s fee still a sliding scale?

Upwork moved most contracts to a flat 10% freelancer fee, replacing the earlier tiered scale (20% on the first $500 with a client, then lower). If your account still shows a tiered rate, edit the percentage to match the tier you are in.

Are there other charges beyond the service fee?

Possibly. Connects to submit proposals, optional membership plans, and withdrawal or currency-conversion fees are separate from the service fee modelled here. This tool covers the percentage taken from your contract earnings.

How do I bid to take home a target amount?

Divide your target by one minus the fee rate. At 10%, to net $2,000 you bid 2,000 ÷ 0.90 = $2,222.22. Change the fee field if your effective rate is different.
